Kinja'd!!!

Got the 5.3 L M7 stripped down, cleaned, and painted. It cleaned up really well, certainly it’s better looking than the rusty oily heap that I got from the junkyard. Painted it with Duplicolor Pontiac Blue Metallic Ceramic spray paint, I cant recommend this paint enough. Dries super fast, it’s very hesitant to run, and the metallic particles are suspended very well and spray evenly with minimal dry spray even at wide angles . Much better than the Rustoleum engine paint I’ve used in the past, plus a 6-pack of this D uplicolor was all of $13 on amazon.

I was able to get three out of four broken exhaust bolts out of the aluminum heads. One snapped off flush, I tried to use a hardened steel easy out to extract the bolt and that broke too. Now I’ve got a piece of hardened steel stuck in a stuck broken bolt. Any tips to get it out? Can’t drill now... I’m thinking I should be able to weld a nut to the broken extractor/bolt and remove it that way. Steel weld shouldn’t stick to the aluminum head?

I drained a couple quarts of oil and p ulled the original truck oil pan as I will need to swap it out to a 98-02 F-Body assembly, the bottom end looked remarkably clean for 190k mi. There was no metal in the oil and nothing stuck to the drain plug magnet. I see no reason to tear it down any further.

Anyone have a clue what this part is on the drivers side of the block? All the service manuals I’ve reviewed show a blank plug should be inserted here, haven’t been able to find a reference to this sensor thing.

Looks like someone equipped a block heater, maybe?  If that would normally be a freeze out plug

Are you planning on replacing the harmonic damper?

Definitely block heater.

I would definitely weld a nut to the broken stud. Make sure you have an excellent ground, or take the head off and disassemble it. Electricity can arc between bearings, cam lobes, valve seats, and anything else with a tight clearance and ruin them.

I think we have a winner! The truck the engine came from was originally sold in central Ontario so the story checks out.

Thanks for the warning, I would never have thought about arcing bearings.

Having seen firsthand at my previous job  how awesome EDM works for machining hardened tool steel, I’d love to build/buy a portable one for exactly the scenario you’re describing.

Interesting setup on the main caps; when did GM go to a bolt & stud? Is that an LS thing?

I believe it’s a stud- bolt combo thing , the oil windage tray bolts to the studs.

Holy crap I had no idea that EDM drills were a thing! I’ve been around EDM- wire cutting machines a lot at a previous job years ago, and they are sweet. Too bad the portable drill versions are so expensive. And in this scenario, you'd still ton the risk of arcing at the bearings and other close tolerance areas in the engine.

I broke a subframe bolt in my caprice and then broke an extractor off in that too.

I used a dremel and some cone shaped stones and a diamond engraving tip to destroy the extractor tip and redrill it for a bigger extractor

Carbide tip drill bits or Dremel bits will work on that hardened steel.

Super cool! I'd still be worried about the possibility of arcing in areas where arcing shouldn't happen. We used to have that problem every now and then on the wire EDM cutting machines.

Yeah a lot of other risks taken to fix one.
